Never ignore a burning smell

Overheating electrics give a warning. Act on it before it becomes a fire.

Electrical faults often smell before you see anything. Overheating plastic gives off a sharp, acrid or even fishy smell, and you may notice brown or black marks around a socket, switch or the consumer unit. These are signs that a connection or component is getting far hotter than it should.

We locate the source with thermal checks and testing, replace scorched fittings and damaged cable, and make sure the circuit is properly protected. If anything we find suggests a wider problem, we explain it clearly before doing any further work.

Call us if you notice:

  • Fishy or hot plastic smell
  • Brown or black marks on sockets
  • Warm or hot switch plates
  • Melted plug or socket
  • Smell from the fuse box
  • Crackling or buzzing sounds

Common causes

What causes a burning electrical smell

We test properly to find the real cause, so the problem is fixed rather than patched.

01

Loose connections

A loose terminal creates resistance and heat. Over time it scorches the fitting and can melt the insulation around it.

02

Overloaded sockets

Extension leads and adaptors running heaters, dryers or kettles can overheat the socket, the plug and the cable behind them.

03

Failing fittings

Old or poor quality sockets, switches and light fittings can break down internally and start to overheat.

04

Damaged cable

Cable that has been crushed, nicked or chewed can heat up at the damaged point, often hidden inside a wall or ceiling.

05

Overheating appliances

A faulty appliance or its plug can be the source. If the smell follows one appliance, unplug it if safe and stop using it.

06

Consumer unit faults

Loose main connections or a failing breaker inside the fuse box can overheat. This needs urgent attention.

Before we arrive

Stay safe until we arrive.

What to do right now about burning smells and scorched fittings, while a qualified electrician is on the way to you.

Step 1

Smoke or flames? Get out

If you see smoke or fire, leave the property, call 999 and do not go back in. Call us once everyone is safe.

Step 2

Switch off at the main switch

If there is no fire and you can reach it safely with dry hands, turn off the main switch on your consumer unit.

Step 3

Unplug if it is safe

If the smell is coming from one appliance or plug and it is not hot or smoking, switch off at the socket and unplug it.

Step 4

Do not touch hot fittings

Never touch a socket, switch or plug that is hot, melted or scorched. Keep children and pets away from it.

Step 5

Note where it is strongest

Without touching anything, note which room or fitting the smell is coming from. It helps us find it quickly.

Step 6

Call us straight away

Do not wait to see if it goes away. Call us and keep the power off to that area until we arrive.

FAQ

Your questions, answered

Common questions about burning smells and scorched fittings. Still unsure? Call us and a qualified electrician will talk it through.

What does an electrical burning smell smell like?

Often like hot or burning plastic, and sometimes like fish. The fishy smell comes from chemicals in overheating plastic fittings. Either way, treat it as urgent.

Should I switch off the electricity?

If there is no fire and you can safely reach the consumer unit with dry hands, yes: switch off the main switch and call an electrician. If there is smoke or fire, get out and call 999.

Can I keep using the socket if it only smells sometimes?

No. A smell that comes and goes usually means a connection is overheating under load. Stop using it until it has been checked.

Why does my fuse box smell of burning?

It can be a loose main connection, a failing breaker or an overloaded circuit. This is a fire risk, so keep clear and call an emergency electrician.

Will you need to rewire the house?

Rarely. Most burning smells come from one fitting, one connection or one length of damaged cable. We fix the cause and only recommend wider work if testing shows it is needed.
