Leaks from above
Bathrooms, showers, tanks and pipework above ceilings are the most common source of water in light fittings.

A leak through a ceiling light, a flooded socket or water near the fuse box is a serious shock risk. Keep clear, switch off only if you can do it safely, and call us. We come out day or night.
Leaks, floods and electrics
Burst pipes, leaking showers, overflowing baths and storm damage can all send water into light fittings, sockets, cables and even the consumer unit. Wet electrics can make metalwork and surfaces live, trip your RCDs and cause damage that carries on long after the leak is fixed.
We isolate the affected circuits so the rest of your property can stay powered, test them to see what has been damaged, and only reconnect them once they are dry and safe. If fittings or cable need replacing we tell you, and we can provide paperwork for your insurer or landlord.

Common causes
We test properly to find the real cause, so the problem is fixed rather than patched.
Bathrooms, showers, tanks and pipework above ceilings are the most common source of water in light fittings.
Winter bursts can soak walls and ceilings fast, reaching cables, back boxes and fittings.
Heavy rain and flooding can affect outside lights, garden sockets, garages and ground floor sockets.
Worn seals around showers, baths and outdoor fittings let water creep in over time.
Persistent damp in lofts, cellars and outbuildings can corrode connections and cause tripping.
Washing machines, dishwashers and overflowing sinks can send water into nearby sockets and spurs.
Before we arrive
What to do right now about water getting into electrics, while a qualified electrician is on the way to you.
Never touch switches, sockets or appliances that are wet, and keep away from water that may be live.
Switch off at the main switch only if you can reach it with dry hands while standing somewhere dry. If not, keep clear.
Turn off the water at the stopcock if you can do it safely, and catch drips away from fittings.
Do not switch on lights below a leak, even after it seems to stop. Use a torch instead.
Keep children and pets away from wet areas and anything electrical nearby.
Call us to make the electrics safe, and a plumber or your landlord to fix the leak.

Warning signs
Do not touch the switch. Switch off at the main switch only if you can do it safely, keep everyone clear and call us. We will isolate the circuit and check what the water has reached.

Wet circuits are isolated so the rest of the property can stay powered safely.
Circuits are insulation tested once dry, and damaged fittings or cable replaced.
Circuits are reconnected only when safe, with paperwork for insurers or landlords.
